Argall, Tobash: Safe Schools Targeted Grants Vital to Safety of Children

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill) and Representative Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill) today announced that the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit # 29 and the Schuylkill Haven Area School District were awarded a total of $8,405 through the PA Safe Schools Targeted Grants program.

“These grants will provide precautions for our local districts to make our schools in Schuylkill County safer,” said Argall. “In light of the devastating tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut last week, this grant program is more important now than ever.”

“In light of recent events in Connecticut, we’re encouraging schools to take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our children,” said Tobash. “I’m hopeful that all schools will apply for the grant, and I’m happy that the Commonwealth is assisting financially.”

The Safe Schools Targeted Grant program awarded 37 recipients out of 97 applicants, including two in Schuylkill County. Schuylkill Intermediate Unit # 29 will receive $2,000 and the Schuylkill Haven Area School District will receive $6,405.

The purpose of the Safe Schools Targeted Grants is to assist school entities by providing funding for programs under their comprehensive safe school plans, which include the planning and implementation of activities that prevent or reduce violence by and against youth on school property and/or transportation to and from school.
