HARRISBURG – The December edition of the local TV program hosted by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) reviews the widening of Route 61 between Frackville and St. Clair, a tour of the new Reading and Northern Railroad passenger platform and maintenance facility in Nesquehoning, and a moving dedication ceremony for the Caitlin McGarry Memorial Bridge in Schuylkill Haven.
Widening Route 61 between Frackville and St. Clair has been a top priority to make the road safer for all. A strong partnership between the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09), Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-123), former Rep. Neal Goodman, and Argall secured $115 million to fund this massive reconstruction. Now, construction is finally underway.
“For anyone who travels along this road as frequently as I do, this is cause for celebration,” said Argall. “My Pennsylvania Dutch grandparents in St. Clair knew the perfect word to sum this up: Endlich. Finally!”
Reading and Northern Railroad’s new Nesquehoning passenger train platform is now open. Located at the former KME Fire Apparatus plant buildings on the north side of Route 54, the full complex also features a train maintenance facility, training classrooms and a gift shop.
“Every new passenger train platform that opens in our area encourages many of the visitors to Jim Thorpe to explore other local communities, supporting local employers and breathing new life into older neighborhoods,” said Argall.
After the 102-year-old Columbia Street bridge over the Schuylkill River in Schuylkill Haven was hit by a flood in 2006, replacing it became a top priority. The bridge was dedicated in honor of Caitlin McGarry, a PennDOT engineer and Schuylkill Haven native who passed away in 2017.
