HARRISBURG – The April edition of the local TV program hosted by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) examines successful strategies to protect communities from devastating floods.
The program begins with a recent Senate Majority Policy Committee hearing hosted by Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) and chaired by Argall in Williamsport. During the hearing, engineers and local officials discussed how stream maintenance can protect homes, roads, and employers from flooding and shared their work in the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Debby last year.
The program then pivots to the Swatara Creek in western Schuylkill County for a tour with Rep. Joanne Stehr of a new flood mitigation and wetlands project that has significantly reduced flooding in Pine Grove and Tremont. These communities experienced devastating flooding for years until a team of conservationists, municipal officials, local employers, and state legislators and agencies executed a comprehensive plan to repair the local watershed. Almost $3 million from the Growing Greener program was acquired to assist with this effort.
“Pine Grove and Tremont are the perfect example of how much of a difference we can make.” said Argall. “I was pleased to hear that the Growing Greener program, which I sponsored when it was first created, has made a significant impact, but it’s clear that we need to consider updates.”
