HARRISBURG – Metro-Tek Electrical Services Co., Kunkletown, has been awarded an $831,250 state grant through the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA), according to State Senator David G. Argall (R-29) and State Representative Julie Harhart (R-183).
The funding will be used to help offset the costs associated with a 2.2 MW ground mounted solar system for Lehigh Township Elementary School, Lehigh Twp., and help secure the future energy prices of the school. A portion of the funding will also be used to help Moore Township Elementary School in Bath.
“I am pleased that both of these educational institutions are able to secure this funding,” said Sen. Argall. “During these tough economic times, making worthwhile investments in energy technology can improve the overall job outlook for our region, in addition to lowering costs for local school districts and taxpayers.”
Nazareth Area, Northampton Area, Pen Argyl Area, Bethlehem Area and Palisades are among other school districts in the region that are applying for or have already received state money available to help pay for solar photovoltaic systems.
“This is an exciting new technology that will make a big difference in the cost of energy for the school district,” said Rep. Harhart. “I am hopeful the use of innovative new ‘green’ technology will set an example for others to consider as a way to save money and our natural resources.”
“The District is excited about this opportunity to ‘go green’ and to use the information that we receive from the solar panels and wind turbines and incorporate it into our curriculum,” said Joseph Kovalchik, Superintendent, Northampton Area School District.
PEDA is an independent public financing authority that was created in 1982 by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority and Emergency Powers Act, which funds clean, advanced energy projects in Pennsylvania.
