Senator Argall Cosponsors Legislation to Ban Gaming Contributions

HARRISBURG – Senator David Argall (R-29) has cosponsored legislation that would reinstate the ban on political contributions by gaming interests.

The General Assembly enacted a ban on contributions, but the state Supreme Court ruled last month that the ban was unconstitutional because it was too broad. The new legislation cosponsored by Argall would correct language in the law so the ban would pass constitutional muster.

Argall said the ban on contributions is necessary to prevent corruption and avoid the appearance of impropriety.

“The public deserves to have confidence that gaming operations in the state are free of corruption and gaming interests do not hold undue influence over lawmakers,” Argall said. “Other states include similar bans on political contributions, and I am hopeful that we can reinstate our ban in Pennsylvania.”

Argall sponsored legislation in 2006 that prevented Pennsylvania casinos from taking advantage of tax breaks offered through the state’s Keystone Opportunity Zones (KOZs). The measure was included in the Gambling Integrity Act of 2006.
