Roundtable to feature state, local leaders to discuss solutions to blight problem

LANCASTER – Senator Scott Martin (R-Lancaster) is hosting a key Senate committee next week to conduct a roundtable discussion with community leaders and local elected officials to outline steps to combat blight and abandonment.

The Senate Majority Policy Committee will hold a roundtable discussion on Monday, August 14 at 10 a.m. in the Lancaster City Council Chambers, 120 N. Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602.

“We want to bring people together to find solutions to problems plaguing our local communities,” Martin said. “This is not a big city problem, but one that affects the boroughs and small towns all across Lancaster County. This roundtable will allow a sharing of ideas of what works, not only here locally, but what has been the recipe for success across the state.”

The Senate Majority Policy Committee is chaired by Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks), who also is the head of the bicameral and bipartisan Blight Task Force. The task force has been instrumental in passing new laws over the last several years to provide more options for communities to combat blight.

“Through similar roundtables in other parts of the state, the state has been successful in passing laws at the request of code enforcement officers, downtown advocates and community leaders to give local municipalities more teeth in dealing with this problem,” Argall said. “Blight is blight no matter if you are in Lancaster or Pottsville. We want to bring people together to discuss what works, what doesn’t work and how the state can continue to be a partner in this ongoing war on blight.”

The public is invited to attend.
