MAHANOY CITY – Senator David G. Argall, R-Schuylkill, is reminding local residents about state laws in effect regarding school bus safety.
“With children returning to school, it is important to know the rules of the road which provide safety and security for both parents and children alike,” said Argall. “One tragedy is too many, which is why I think it’s vital to review these rules with school buses back on the roadway.”
According to Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law, drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus when:
- Meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended.
- Approaching an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended.
Drivers must wait until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm has been withdrawn and children have reached a place of safety.
Violators of these laws will receive a 60-day driver’s license suspension, five points on their driving record and a $250 fine.
Over 1,000 drivers in Pennsylvania do not obey the School Bus Stopping Law each year.
