HARRISBURG – Local law enforcement agencies in Lehighton Borough, Mahoning Township, and Weatherly Borough were awarded state grants to help them better protect their communities, according to State Senator David G. Argall (R-29) and State Representative Doyle Heffley (R-122).
“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to keep the rest of us safe every single day,” said Senator Argall. “These highly competitive grants will help them do their critically important job at the highest possible level.”
“I’m happy to see these dollars coming back to our local law enforcement agencies, so they can better protect the people of Carbon County,” said Rep. Heffley. “As elected officials, it’s important to take every opportunity to support our police officers and first responders.”
Lehighton Borough was awarded $122,773 to upgrade the department’s current report management system. Mahoning Township was awarded $120,442 for body-worn cameras, automatic license plate readers, and upgrades to their records management system. Weatherly Borough was awarded $86,477 for upgrades to the records management system and property room.
The grants were awarded as part of Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s Local Law Enforcement Support Grant Program, which was created by lawmakers in the state budget approved in July.
Program funding can be used for many different projects or purchases to enhance public safety, such as communications system upgrades, body-worn or in-car cameras, recruitment and retention, training, surveillance cameras, automated license plate readers and more.
