HARRISBURG – A bill to ensure that state corrections officers and forensic employees are given due process when accused of wrongdoing was approved by the Senate today by a bipartisan vote of 36-14, according to the bill’s prime sponsor Sen. Dave Argall (R-29).
“While wrongdoers should always be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, we need to ensure that all corrections officers, who put their safety on the line to protect us from Pennsylvania’s most dangerous criminals, are afforded their constitutional right to due process,” said Argall. “I am thankful this bill won strong bipartisan support.”
Senate Bill 239 would establish guidelines and procedures for investigating all corrections officers and forensic employees who are accused of crimes. Argall drafted the bill after hearing reports of officers being suspended without pay or benefits without being given a hearing or an opportunity to appeal.
The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for its consideration.
