JIM THORPE – Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) and Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-122) hosted a summit focused on strengthening the regional economy in Carbon County on Monday evening at the historic Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe.
Sec. Rick Siger of the Department of Community and Economic Development, representatives from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, local government officials, and other community leaders participated in the summit.
“I never could have imagined the rebirth of downtown Jim Thorpe when I was growing up in my half-a-double in the East End of Tamaqua,” said Argall.
“Each year, thousands visit Carbon County to enjoy what we have to offer, but also contribute to our economy by supporting our local businesses,” said Heffley. “People come far and wide to navigate our rivers and streams, hike our picturesque forests and nature trails, or walk the streets downtown to take in our rich history. I’m excited to co-host this summit with Sen. Argall, and I look forward to working with our local businesses to promote tourism, preserve our communities and create new and exciting opportunities to showcase all that Carbon County has to offer.”
The Center for Rural Pennsylvania’s Executive Director, Dr. Kyle C. Kopko, noted: “I was happy to see a large and diverse cross section of regional leaders come together to openly discuss the challenges their communities are working to address and the opportunities that they can grow. These individuals are truly committed to ensuring a prosperous future for the entire Carbon County region.”
“Meetings like this one led to the restoration of the 1874 railroad station in Tamaqua, which was on the cusp of being demolished before dedicated volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work,” Argall continued. “By building partnerships and working together, I know we can replicate that success throughout Carbon County.”
