HAZLETON – The December edition of the local TV program hosted by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) highlights a recent meeting in Hazleton of the Basic Education Funding Commission.
“There is no issue I hear about more from my constituents than our unfair, unconstitutional school funding system,” Argall said. “I invited the Basic Education Funding Commission to come to Hazleton – one of the largest and most challenged school districts in the entire state – so that we could hear first-hand about the unique issues faced by local teachers, students, parents, and taxpayers.”
Dr. Brian Uplinger, Superintendent of the Hazleton Area School District, and Bob Curry and Rossanna Gabriel from the Hazleton Integration Project, testified at the hearing.
Argall noted the challenges faced by students who speak English as their second language, injecting Spanish into his opening remarks to demonstrate the difficulties he would have learning complex math or science in a foreign language.
“As a member of the Basic Education Funding Commission and as the new Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, I will continue to fight to ensure that students have the resources they need to be successful and to aid our taxpayers by replacing our archaic, property tax-based school funding system,” Argall said.
