20 Years of College in Tamaqua Thanks to the Morgan Foundation and LCCC

This week, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center in Tamaqua. Since the college opened its doors, almost 11,000 students have attended classes here. Over 2,200 students have earned associate degrees, Certificates, and Diplomas.

Because of this partnership, the Tamaqua Area School District now has a higher percentage of residents who have earned an associate degree than almost any other Schuylkill County school district – it’s increased by 50% in the past decade.

Thank you to Mark Schweiker, the 44th governor of Pennsylvania, for joining us, just as he did 20 years ago, and for helping to turn this dream into a reality.  As I pointed out in my comments, this was a true partnership between the Morgan Foundation, LCCC, the Tamaqua Area School Board President Larry Wittig and his colleagues on the board and countless teachers and administrators, and state government.

This is one of most successful efforts to breathe new life into a community that I have ever witnessed.  It is truly the gift that has kept on giving for more than 20 years!

Johnson College Brings Technical Education to Hazle Township

I was invited to speak at the ribbon cutting ceremony for Johnson College’s new satellite campus at the Humboldt Industrial Park in Hazle Township this week.

Thanks to a productive partnership between CAN DO, Inc., local employers, and Johnson College, people willing to learn the technical skills that are so needed across northeast Pennsylvania can take the classes they need right here in our community!

As the chairman of the Senate Education Committee, one of my goals is encouraging better connections between the classroom and the workplace – here in southern Luzerne County, we now have a perfect example of how to achieve this goal.

Saturday: 35th Schuylkill Haven Borough Day

Don’t miss the 35th Schuylkill Haven Borough Day on Saturday! There will be lots to do, including train rides by the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.; music, performers, local food, and much more.

Read more about everything planned for the day here.

Meeting with Constituents in Albrightsville

Thank you to everyone who joined Rep. Doyle Heffley and me at our town hall in Albrightsville this morning. We discussed our unfair school property tax system, how to fix more of our roads and bridges, and the need for more housing. We’ll be hosting more of these events soon, keep an eye out for more details.

How Can We Better Support Local Schools?

I toured Panther Valley Elementary School with Superintendent Dave McAndrew and Principal Rob Palazzo this week.

As the chair of the Senate Education Committee, understanding what issues local schools are grappling with is critical as we review how best to improve Pennsylvania’s education system. I look forward to continuing our bipartisan work to properly support our students and educators.

Free Hard to Read License Plate Check in Cass Township

Is your license plate worn out? You can get it replaced for free at an event I’m hosting with Rep. Tim Twardzik on October 11th. A Cass Township police officer will be on hand to inspect your plate to determine if it’s illegible.

For more information or to RSVP, call 570-794-4039.

Meeting with Hazleton Area School District Teachers

I met with teachers from Hazleton Area School District yesterday to hear how the Senate and the House can support them in educating the next generation of Pennsylvanians.

As the chairman of the Senate Education Committee, I’m addressing the educator workforce shortage. The Senate passed my bill last week to make it easier for qualified teachers to get their required certification.

Grants for Nonprofits Negatively Impacted by Covid-19

The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance (NEPA) has launched the Schuylkill County Nonprofit COVID-19 Response Grant Program. Eligible organizations must have been recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) during calendar year 2019 and must provide services within Schuylkill County.

Many nonprofits faced possible closure because of significant challenges in covering payroll, rent, and other operating expenses due to the pandemic.

Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton will be holding two free community flu shot clinics next week. Check out the flier above for more information.
