In this Update:
Remembering the Attack on Pearl HarborThe attack on the U.S. Naval Station at Pearl Harbor 83 years ago galvanized support for U.S. entry into World War II. We remember the more than 2,400 Americans killed and the unity of purpose that followed this cowardly, surprise attack. Following the attack, many answered their country’s call to service. My dad’s uncle, Bill Needs from Shenandoah, saw terrible combat in 1945 in Iwo Jima and Okinawa and brought home this Japanese army bayonet, which now hangs in my Mahanoy City office in honor of all our veterans – especially those who fought to free the world from fascism in WWII. A Senatorial Holiday Gift: Leiby’s PiesIt’s tradition in the state Capitol for senators to exchange holiday gifts, typically a specialty item from the district they represent. This year, I chose cherry crumble pies from Leiby’s Ice Cream House & Restaurant – a perfect way to spread good cheer! This family-owned establishment has been a Tamaqua staple since 1965, when Leiby’s Dairy decided to open a restaurant featuring their excellent ice cream. I’ve been going there for as long as I can remember. If you’re looking for desserts this holiday season, they should be on your list! Completing Key Transportation Projects in the 29th DistrictThis month’s edition of my local TV program reviews the widening of Route 61 between Frackville and St. Clair, a tour of the new Reading and Northern Railroad passenger train platform and maintenance facility in Nesquehoning, and a moving dedication ceremony for the Caitlin McGarry Memorial Bridge in Schuylkill Haven. Widening Route 61 between Frackville and St. Clair has been a top priority to make the road safer for all. Now, construction is finally underway. For anyone who travels along this road as frequently as I do, this is cause for celebration. My Pennsylvania Dutch grandparents in St. Clair knew the perfect word to sum this up: Endlich. Finally! Reading and Northern Railroad’s new Nesquehoning passenger train platform is now open, to encourage many of the visitors to Jim Thorpe to explore other local communities, supporting local employers and breathing new life into older neighborhoods. After the 102-year-old Columbia Street bridge over the Schuylkill River in Schuylkill Haven was hit by a flood, replacing it became a top priority. The bridge was dedicated in memory of Caitlin McGarry, a PennDOT engineer and Schuylkill Haven native. Watch the full show here. Hazleton’s Pines Eatery and Spirits Celebrates Grand OpeningThe Pines Eatery and Spirits hosted their grand opening this week. Located on Broad Street, the iconic Hazleton restaurant is now owned by Carlos Monclus and Robert Collado. The Pines is one of my favorite restaurants to visit in Hazleton – I’m excited to see it continue under new ownership just down the street from the downtown office Rep. Dane Watro and I share. Congratulations and best wishes! Building a Nature Park in HazletonThe Hazleton Integration Project (HIP) is constructing a two-acre nature park on the western perimeter of the city. HIP volunteers have been working to create trails and remove debris from the area. This week, we gathered to celebrate new financial support for this important project from Vistra. Green spaces are vital for any community, especially larger cities like Hazleton. This new park will provide residents with a new place to walk and enjoy the natural beauty of our region. Pictured here: me; Rossanna Gabriel, Executive Director, Hazleton Integration Project; Rep. Watro; Colin Fitzsimmons, Director of Government Affairs, Vistra Corp.; Elaine Maddon Curry, Program Coordinator, Hazleton Integration Project; Bob Curry, Founding President, Hazleton Integration Project. Congrats Elaine Dalvet!Earlier this week, I congratulated Elaine Dalvet on her retirement. Elaine has served as the secretary for New Philadelphia Borough for more than 45 years! In honor of her many years of public service, I presented her with official Senate and House citations (on behalf of Rep. Tim Twardzik) and wished her much relaxation – she’s earned it! Scam Seminar in LehightonThank you to everyone who attended Rep. Doyle Heffley and my scam seminar in Lehighton. David Shallcross, the Director of the Senior Protection Unit of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, provided a thorough overview of how to avoid falling prey to the latest scams targeting seniors. The most important takeaway: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! |
